Deep Space Networks
Deep Space Networks (DSN) in the context of aerospace engineering refers to the international network of antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions and radio and radar astronomy observations for the exploration of the solar system and the universe. The network also supports selected Earth-orbiting missions. DSN is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The network consists of three deep-space communications facilities placed approximately 120 degrees apart around the world: in California (USA), Madrid (Spain), and Canberra (Australia). These facilities provide the ability to communicate with spacecraft throughout their entire orbit, not just when they are over specific locations. The DSN provides a variety of support services to deep space missions, including tracking, telemetry, and command services. It also provides a crucial role in the precise navigation of spacecraft, which is vital for successful missions.
