Cryptographic Key
A cryptographic key is a piece of information used in combination with an algorithm (a cipher) to transform plaintext into ciphertext or vice versa. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, cryptographic keys are used to secure communication between spacecraft and ground stations, as well as between different spacecraft. These keys are typically generated using complex mathematical algorithms and are kept secret to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information. Cryptographic keys are also used to authenticate the identity of spacecraft and ground stations, ensuring that only authorized parties are able to access the communication channel. In addition, cryptographic keys are used to secure data stored on spacecraft and ground systems, protecting against unauthorized access and tampering.
