Calibrated Airspeed

Calibrated Airspeed (CAS) is a type of airspeed, which is a crucial concept in aerospace engineering. It is the speed at which an aircraft is moving through the air, corrected for instrument errors and position error due to airflow disruption. The airspeed indicator in an aircraft measures the dynamic pressure, which is the difference between the static pressure and the total pressure. However, this measurement is not always accurate due to various factors such as the position of the aircraft, the shape of the aircraft, and the condition of the airspeed indicator. Therefore, the indicated airspeed is corrected for these instrument and position errors to obtain the calibrated airspeed. The calibrated airspeed is an important parameter for determining the aircraft's performance, including its lift, drag, and power required. It is also used in the aircraft's flight envelope, which is a diagram that shows the boundaries within which an aircraft can safely operate.
