Bone And Muscle Loss

Bone and muscle loss refers to the reduction in bone density and muscle mass that occurs in astronauts during spaceflight due to the absence of gravity. In microgravity, the body no longer needs to support its own weight, leading to a decrease in bone density and muscle mass. This can result in a variety of health problems, including increased risk of fractures, decreased physical performance, and decreased overall health. To combat bone and muscle loss, astronauts engage in regular exercise and take calcium and vitamin D supplements. Additionally, new technologies such as artificial gravity and resistance training devices are being developed to help mitigate the effects of microgravity on the body.
