Ablative Materials


Ablative materials are substances that are designed to erode and char when exposed to high temperatures and pressures, such as those experienced during atmospheric reentry or in rocket engine nozzles. The purpose of ablative materials is to protect the underlying structure from the extreme heat generated by friction with the atmosphere or combustion gases. As the ablative material erodes, it carries away the heat with it, preventing it from reaching the underlying structure. Ablative materials can be made from a variety of substances, including carbon-based composites, ceramics, and metals. The choice of material depends on the specific application and the temperature and pressure conditions it will be exposed to.
