Water Recovery Systems

Water Recovery Systems are the technologies and processes used to collect, purify, and recycle water in space missions. These systems are essential for long-duration missions, where water is a limited resource and recycling is necessary to sustain life. Water Recovery Systems typically include a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove contaminants and impurities from wastewater, urine, and humidity condensate. The purified water is then reused for drinking, food preparation, hygiene, and other purposes. Water Recovery Systems also play a critical role in managing the overall mass balance of a spacecraft, as they reduce the need for water resupply missions and minimize the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of. NASA's Water Recovery System on the International Space Station is an example of a complex and efficient system that uses distillation, ion exchange, catalytic oxidation, and other processes to recover up to 93% of the water from wastewater and urine.
