VHF Radio

In the context of aerospace engineering, VHF (Very High Frequency) Radio refers to a type of radio communication system used in aviation. It operates in the frequency range of 108 to 137 MHz, which is divided into two bands: the COM band (118.000 MHz to 136.975 MHz) for air-to-ground communication and the NAV band (108.000 MHz to 117.950 MHz) for navigation. VHF radio communication is primarily line-of-sight, meaning the transmitting and receiving antennas must have an unobstructed path between them. This makes it ideal for air traffic control communication, as it allows for clear, direct communication between aircraft and ground stations. However, its range is limited by the curvature of the Earth and the altitude of the aircraft. VHF radios are a critical component of an aircraft's communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) system, providing a reliable means of communication in a variety of flight conditions.
