Type Ia Supernovae
Type Ia supernovae are a type of stellar explosion that occurs in binary star systems where one of the stars is a white dwarf. The white dwarf accretes matter from its companion star until it reaches a critical mass, causing a runaway nuclear fusion reaction that completely disrupts the star. Type Ia supernovae are important astronomical events because they are used as standard candles to measure distances in the universe and to study the expansion of the universe. They also play a key role in the production of heavy elements, such as iron, in the universe.
