Standard Candles
In space and astronautical engineering, standard candles refer to astronomical objects with known luminosity, which can be used to measure distances to other objects in the universe. By comparing the apparent brightness of a standard candle to its known luminosity, astronomers can calculate the distance to the object. Examples of standard candles include Cepheid variables, Type Ia supernovae, and RR Lyrae variables. Standard candles are important tools for measuring distances in the universe, as they allow astronomers to determine the scale of the universe and the rate of its expansion.
