Binary Star Systems
Binary star systems are systems in which two stars are in orbit around their common center of mass. These systems are important in the study of astrophysics and astronomy as they provide a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of two interacting stars. Binary star systems can be classified into several types based on the distance between the stars, the mass of the stars, and the type of orbit they follow. Some binary star systems are eclipsing binaries, where one star passes in front of the other, causing a periodic decrease in brightness. Others are spectroscopic binaries, where the stars are too close to be resolved individually, but their combined spectrum shows periodic shifts due to their orbital motion. Binary star systems can also be used to measure the masses of stars, as well as to study the evolution of stars in close proximity to each other.
