Sparse Matrices

In space and astronautical engineering, sparse matrices refer to matrices that have a large number of elements equal to zero. These matrices are commonly used to represent systems with a large number of variables, where most of the variables are not connected to each other. Sparse matrices are particularly useful in numerical simulations of physical systems, where the computational cost of solving a system of equations can be reduced by exploiting the sparsity of the matrix. In addition, sparse matrices are used in data compression and in the analysis of large datasets, such as those generated by remote sensing or satellite imaging.
