Noise Figure

Noise Figure is a measure of the degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a system caused by components in the signal chain. It is defined as the ratio of the signal-to-noise ratio at the input of the system to the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of the system. A low noise figure is desirable in any system where the signal is weak or where the signal-to-noise ratio is critical. In space and astronautical engineering, noise figure is an important parameter in the design of communication systems, especially for deep space missions where the signal strength is very weak. The noise figure of a system can be improved by using low-noise components, such as low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), and by minimizing the number of components in the signal chain.
