Fatigue Life

Fatigue life is the number of cycles of loading and unloading that a material can withstand before it fails due to fatigue. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, fatigue life is an important consideration for materials used in spacecraft and launch vehicles. These materials are subjected to repeated loading and unloading during launch, operation, and re-entry, which can cause fatigue and ultimately lead to failure. Engineers must carefully select materials and design structures to ensure that they have sufficient fatigue life to withstand the expected number of cycles. Fatigue life can be improved through various methods, such as using materials with higher strength and ductility, reducing stress concentrations, and implementing effective inspection and maintenance programs.
