Semiconductor Channel
A semiconductor channel is a region in a semiconductor device where the majority carriers (electrons or holes) flow between two terminals. It is typically a thin layer of semiconductor material, such as silicon, that is doped to create a specific type of conductivity. The channel is an important component in many semiconductor devices, including transistors, diodes, and solar cells. In a field-effect transistor (FET), for example, the channel is the region between the source and drain terminals that is controlled by the gate voltage. By varying the gate voltage, the conductivity of the channel can be modulated, allowing for amplification or switching of an electrical signal.
