Semiconductor

A semiconductor is a material that has electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, semiconductors are used in electronic devices that are designed to operate in harsh environments, such as those encountered in space. These devices include solar cells, transistors, and integrated circuits. Semiconductors are also used in radiation-hardened electronics, which are designed to withstand the high levels of radiation found in space. The properties of semiconductors can be tailored by doping them with impurities, which changes their electrical properties. This allows for the creation of p-type and n-type semiconductors, which are used to create p-n junctions, the basis of many electronic devices.
