Secondary Structures

In space and astronautical engineering, secondary structures refer to the non-load bearing components of a spacecraft or satellite. These structures are designed to support and protect the primary structures, which are responsible for carrying the loads and stresses of launch and operation. Examples of secondary structures include thermal blankets, solar arrays, antennas, and other external components. Secondary structures are critical to the overall functionality and success of a spacecraft or satellite, as they provide necessary functions such as power generation, communication, and thermal control. Designing and integrating secondary structures requires careful consideration of factors such as weight, size, and compatibility with other systems. Additionally, secondary structures must be able to withstand the harsh environment of space, including extreme temperatures, radiation, and micrometeoroids.
