Satellite Navigation Systems
Satellite Navigation Systems are a type of system used in aerospace engineering that utilizes a network of satellites to provide geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. This allows users on the ground, in the air, or at sea to determine their location, velocity, and time. The system works by transmitting signals from satellites to a receiver on the ground. The receiver then calculates the user's precise location by measuring the time it took for each signal to arrive from multiple satellites. The most well-known satellite navigation system is the Global Positioning System (GPS), operated by the United States. Other systems include the Russian GLONASS, the European Union's Galileo, and China's BeiDou. These systems are critical for a wide range of applications, including navigation for aircraft, ships, and vehicles, timing for telecommunications networks, and in scientific research such as weather forecasting and earthquake monitoring.
