RFI Mitigation
RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) Mitigation refers to the techniques and methods used to reduce or eliminate the effects of unwanted electromagnetic radiation on spacecraft and their instruments. RFI can come from a variety of sources, including other spacecraft, ground-based transmitters, and natural sources such as lightning. The effects of RFI can range from minor disruptions to complete mission failure. Mitigation techniques include shielding, filtering, and frequency planning. Shielding involves the use of materials to block or absorb RFI, while filtering involves the use of electronic components to remove unwanted frequencies. Frequency planning involves carefully selecting the frequencies used by spacecraft and ground-based transmitters to minimize interference. RFI mitigation is a critical aspect of spacecraft design and operation, as it ensures that scientific instruments can operate effectively and that data can be transmitted reliably.
