Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Systems

In the context of aerospace engineering, Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Systems refer to a satellite navigation technique used to enhance the precision of position data derived from satellite-based positioning systems, such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou. It uses measurements of the phase of the signal's carrier wave, rather than the information content of the signal, and relies on a single reference station to provide real-time corrections, providing up to centimeter-level accuracy. With RTK, network infrastructure is required to supply correction data to the rover, but the precision is not dependent on the distance from the base station. This makes it a highly effective tool in aerospace navigation systems, particularly in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other high-precision applications. RTK systems are also used in automated vehicle systems, precision farming, machine control, and other applications where precise real-time positioning is required.
