Protective Coatings
Protective coatings are materials applied to spacecraft surfaces to protect them from the harsh space environment. These coatings can provide thermal control, radiation shielding, and protection from micrometeoroids and debris. Thermal control coatings are designed to regulate the temperature of the spacecraft by reflecting or absorbing sunlight and emitting heat. Radiation shielding coatings protect the spacecraft and its occupants from harmful radiation by absorbing or reflecting it. Micrometeoroid and debris protection coatings are designed to prevent damage to the spacecraft from small particles in space. These coatings can be made from a variety of materials, including polymers, ceramics, and metals.
