Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the base of the food chain in the ocean. They are responsible for producing about half of the oxygen on Earth through photosynthesis. Phytoplankton are important indicators of the health of the ocean and are sensitive to changes in water temperature, nutrient availability, and ocean acidity. They play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and transferring it to the deep ocean. In addition, phytoplankton are studied in space and astronautical engineering context as they can be used as a model organism for studying the effects of microgravity on photosynthesis and cellular processes.
