Transmissometer

In the context of aerospace engineering, a transmissometer is a device used to measure the transmission of light through the atmosphere and is particularly useful in determining meteorological visibility. It operates by sending a beam of light over a known path length and measuring the amount of light received at the other end. The reduction in the intensity of light is caused by scattering and absorption by particles in the air such as dust, fog, rain, snow, or smoke. This information is crucial for aircraft operations, especially during takeoff and landing, where visibility is a critical factor. The transmissometer provides a quantitative measure of the visual range, which is the maximum distance at which large objects can be seen and identified. In addition, transmissometers are also used in environmental monitoring to measure air quality and pollution levels. They are typically installed at airports and meteorological stations.
