Microwave Landing System

The Microwave Landing System (MLS) is a type of instrument approach system used in aviation to enable aircraft to land in poor weather conditions or reduced visibility. It operates in the microwave spectrum of radio frequencies, typically around 5 GHz. The system provides precision lateral and vertical guidance to aircraft during approach and landing phases, which is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient operations. MLS is designed to be highly accurate and reliable, with the ability to function effectively in various environmental conditions. It consists of three main components: the azimuth station, which provides lateral guidance; the elevation station, which provides vertical guidance; and the range station, which provides distance information. The signals from these stations are processed by the aircraft's avionics system to generate a flight path for the pilot to follow. MLS is considered more flexible and capable than its predecessor, the Instrument Landing System (ILS), as it allows for curved approaches and is less susceptible to interference.
