Magnetometers

Magnetometers are instruments used to measure the strength and direction of magnetic fields. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, magnetometers are used to study the magnetic fields of planets, moons, asteroids, and other celestial bodies. They are also used to measure the magnetic fields generated by spacecraft and to monitor the space environment for magnetic disturbances that could affect spacecraft operations. Magnetometers can be either vector or scalar instruments, depending on whether they measure the direction as well as the strength of the magnetic field. Vector magnetometers are used to study the three-dimensional structure of magnetic fields, while scalar magnetometers are used to measure the total strength of the field. Some common types of magnetometers used in space and astronautical engineering include fluxgate magnetometers, search coil magnetometers, and magnetoresistive magnetometers.
