Mach Number

Mach Number is the ratio of the speed of an object to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium. In space and astronautical engineering, Mach Number is an important parameter for designing and analyzing supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. It is used to determine the compressibility effects on the flow of gases around the vehicle, which can cause drag, heating, and other aerodynamic phenomena. Mach Number is also used to define the flight regime of a vehicle, such as subsonic, transonic, supersonic, or hypersonic. In addition, Mach Number is used to characterize the performance of propulsion systems, such as ramjets, scramjets, and rockets, which operate at high speeds and altitudes.
