Localizer

In the context of aerospace engineering, a localizer refers to a ground-based radio transmitter that provides horizontal guidance for aircraft during landing. It is a critical component of the Instrument Landing System (ILS), which is a system that provides pilots with the necessary information to land an aircraft in low visibility conditions. The localizer transmits a radio beam that is aligned with the centerline of the runway. This beam provides lateral guidance to the pilot, indicating whether the aircraft is to the left or right of the runway centerline. The localizer signal is typically received by the aircraft's navigation system, which then provides the pilot with a visual indication of the aircraft's position relative to the runway centerline. The localizer works in conjunction with the glide slope, another component of the ILS, which provides vertical guidance for the aircraft. Together, the localizer and glide slope provide the pilot with a precise 3D path to follow for a safe landing.
