Light Yield
Light Yield is the amount of light produced by a scintillator material when it interacts with ionizing radiation. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, scintillators are commonly used in radiation detectors to measure the energy and intensity of charged particles and gamma rays. The light yield is an important parameter for scintillators as it determines the sensitivity and resolution of the detector. High light yield scintillators are preferred for space applications as they can detect low energy particles and provide accurate measurements of radiation doses. However, high light yield scintillators also tend to have a shorter lifespan due to radiation damage. Therefore, the choice of scintillator material and its light yield must be carefully considered for each specific space mission.
