Jettison

Jettison is the act of intentionally discarding a part of a spacecraft or rocket in order to reduce weight or to improve performance. This can be done during any phase of a mission, from launch to landing. Jettisoned parts can include fairings, heat shields, boosters, and even entire stages of a rocket. Jettisoning is a critical aspect of spacecraft design and operation, as it allows for more efficient use of fuel and can increase the payload capacity of a spacecraft. However, jettisoning also carries risks, as discarded parts can collide with other objects in space and cause damage. Therefore, careful planning and execution are necessary to ensure the safety and success of a mission.
