Interferometers

Interferometers are instruments that use the interference of light waves to make precise measurements. In space and astronautical engineering, interferometers are used for a variety of purposes, including measuring the shape and surface features of mirrors and lenses, detecting gravitational waves, and studying the properties of stars and other celestial objects. Interferometers work by splitting a beam of light into two or more paths, then recombining the paths to create an interference pattern. By analyzing the interference pattern, scientists can make highly accurate measurements of distance, velocity, and other properties of the objects being studied.
