Inertial Confinement Fusion

Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is a type of fusion energy research that aims to create controlled nuclear fusion power by heating and compressing a fuel target, typically in the form of a small pellet containing a mixture of deuterium and tritium. The fuel is heated and compressed using high-powered lasers, causing the nuclei to fuse and release energy in the form of high-energy particles and radiation. ICF is a promising approach to fusion energy because it has the potential to produce large amounts of energy with relatively small amounts of fuel, and without the long-lived radioactive waste associated with traditional nuclear power. However, ICF faces significant technical challenges, including the need for high-powered lasers, precise target fabrication, and the development of materials that can withstand the extreme conditions created by the fusion process.
