Hard Disk Drives
Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) are non-volatile storage devices that store and retrieve digital data using magnetic storage and rotating platters. In a typical HDD, one or more platters are coated with a magnetic material and divided into concentric circles called tracks. The read/write head of the HDD accesses the data by moving across the platters and reading or writing data to the tracks. The speed of the platters and the read/write head determines the performance of the HDD. HDDs are commonly used in space and astronautical engineering applications for storing large amounts of data, such as telemetry data from spacecraft or satellite imagery. However, the mechanical nature of HDDs makes them vulnerable to damage from shock and vibration, which can be a concern in space environments where there is no gravity or atmosphere to dampen these effects.
