Capillary Forces


Capillary forces are the forces that arise due to the surface tension of liquids. In space and astronautical engineering, capillary forces play an important role in the behavior of fluids in microgravity environments. In the absence of gravity, fluids tend to form spherical shapes due to the balance between the surface tension and the pressure inside the droplet. Capillary forces can also cause fluids to flow through narrow channels or porous materials, which can be useful in applications such as fuel cells and water filtration systems. However, capillary forces can also be a challenge in space engineering, as they can cause fluids to stick to surfaces and interfere with the operation of equipment. Understanding and controlling capillary forces is therefore an important aspect of space and astronautical engineering.
