Bone Marrow Transplant
Bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure that involves the replacement of damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells. This procedure is used to treat various types of cancer, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, as well as other blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. The transplant can be autologous, where the patient's own bone marrow is used, or allogeneic, where bone marrow from a donor is used. The success of the transplant depends on various factors, such as the type of disease being treated, the age and health of the patient, and the compatibility of the donor. The procedure involves high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to destroy the diseased bone marrow, followed by the infusion of healthy bone marrow stem cells. After the transplant, the patient is closely monitored for complications and may require ongoing medical care.
