Atrophy
In space and astronautical engineering, atrophy refers to the decrease in size or function of a body part or system due to the effects of microgravity and spaceflight. Prolonged exposure to microgravity can cause muscle and bone loss, cardiovascular deconditioning, and changes in the nervous system. Atrophy can also occur in plants and other organisms exposed to space conditions. Understanding the mechanisms of atrophy and developing countermeasures is important for the health and safety of astronauts during long-duration space missions.
