Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a form of carbon that has been treated with oxygen to make it highly porous and thus increase its surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. In space and astronautical engineering, activated charcoal is used as a filter material to remove impurities from air and water. It is also used in spacecraft life support systems to remove carbon dioxide from the air breathed by astronauts. Activated charcoal is also used in rocket propulsion systems as a fuel and as a catalyst in the production of certain chemicals.
