Yield Strength
Yield strength is the amount of stress that a material can withstand without undergoing permanent deformation. In other words, it is the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, yield strength is an important property to consider when designing spacecraft and their components. Materials with high yield strength are preferred because they can withstand higher stresses and loads without deforming permanently. This is particularly important in space where there are extreme temperature fluctuations and exposure to radiation, which can weaken materials over time. Yield strength is typically measured through tensile testing, where a sample of the material is subjected to increasing levels of stress until it begins to deform. The stress at which deformation begins is the yield strength.
