UTC
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is one of several closely related successors to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). For most purposes, UTC is considered interchangeable with GMT, but GMT is no longer precisely defined by the scientific community. UTC is used by the international aviation industry for flight plans and air traffic control, as well as by the scientific community and the military. It is also widely used for internet and World Wide Web standards. UTC is based on International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap seconds added at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. The difference between UTC and TAI is kept to within 0.9 seconds by the introduction of occasional intercalary leap seconds.
