Tropical Storm Formation

Tropical storm formation is the process by which a tropical cyclone forms over the ocean. It begins with a disturbance in the atmosphere, such as a cluster of thunderstorms, that moves over warm ocean waters. As the warm, moist air rises, it cools and condenses, releasing heat and causing the air pressure to drop. This drop in pressure causes more air to rush in, creating strong winds that begin to circulate around a center of low pressure. If the winds reach a sustained speed of 39 mph or higher, the system is classified as a tropical storm. The storm will continue to strengthen as it moves over warm water, potentially becoming a hurricane if the winds reach 74 mph or higher.
