Thrust-to-weight Ratio


Thrust-to-weight ratio is a measure of the efficiency of a rocket engine in the context of space and astronautical engineering. It is the ratio of the force (thrust) produced by the rocket engine to the mass of the rocket itself. A high thrust-to-weight ratio is desirable for a rocket to achieve the necessary acceleration to reach orbit or escape velocity. The higher the ratio, the less fuel is required to achieve a given acceleration, which reduces the overall weight of the rocket. This, in turn, allows for a greater payload capacity or a smaller, more cost-effective rocket.
