Thermoelectric Devices

Thermoelectric devices are solid-state devices that convert heat into electricity or vice versa. They are based on the thermoelectric effect, which is the phenomenon of a temperature difference between two dissimilar conductors resulting in a voltage difference between them. In space and astronautical engineering, thermoelectric devices are used for power generation and thermal management. They are particularly useful in space applications because they have no moving parts, are highly reliable, and can operate in harsh environments. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are used to convert heat from radioisotope sources, such as plutonium-238, into electricity for deep space missions. Thermoelectric coolers (TECs) are used for thermal management of spacecraft electronics and to maintain the temperature of scientific instruments. They are also used in spacesuits to regulate the temperature of the astronaut's body.
