Subduction Zones

Subduction zones are areas where two tectonic plates converge, and one plate is forced beneath the other into the mantle. These zones are characterized by intense geological activity, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountain ranges. Subduction zones are also associated with the formation of oceanic trenches, which are the deepest parts of the ocean. The subduction of oceanic plates beneath continental plates can result in the formation of large mountain ranges, such as the Andes in South America and the Cascades in North America. Subduction zones are important in the study of space and astronautical engineering because they can affect the Earth's rotation and gravitational field, and they can also generate tsunamis that can impact coastal regions.
