Structural Resonances

Structural resonances refer to the natural frequencies at which a structure vibrates when subjected to external forces. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, structural resonances are of critical importance as they can cause significant damage to spacecraft and launch vehicles. These resonances can be excited by a variety of sources, including engine vibrations, aerodynamic loads, and acoustic noise. Engineers must carefully design and test spacecraft and launch vehicles to ensure that they do not experience structural resonances during launch or in orbit. Failure to do so can result in catastrophic failure of the vehicle. To mitigate the effects of structural resonances, engineers use a variety of techniques, including passive damping, active control systems, and careful selection of materials and structural configurations.
