Stimulated Emission
Stimulated emission is a process in which an incoming photon of a specific frequency interacts with an excited atom or molecule, causing it to emit a second photon of the same frequency, direction, and phase. This process is the basis for the operation of lasers, which use stimulated emission to produce a coherent, monochromatic beam of light. In space and astronautical engineering, stimulated emission is used in the development of laser-based communication systems, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors, and laser propulsion systems for spacecraft.
