Stellar Mass

Stellar mass is the mass of a star, typically measured in units of solar masses. It is an important parameter in the study of stellar evolution and determines the star's luminosity, radius, and lifetime. Stellar mass can be estimated through various methods, including spectroscopy, astrometry, and binary star systems. The mass of a star is a critical factor in determining its fate, as stars with different masses follow different evolutionary paths. For example, low-mass stars like red dwarfs can live for trillions of years, while high-mass stars like blue giants have much shorter lifetimes and end their lives in spectacular supernova explosions. Stellar mass also plays a crucial role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, as the distribution of stellar masses affects the overall shape and structure of a galaxy.
