Shear Modulus

Shear modulus, also known as the modulus of rigidity, is a material property that describes the ability of a material to resist deformation in response to an applied force perpendicular to a surface or plane. In space and astronautical engineering, shear modulus is an important parameter for designing and analyzing structures that are subjected to shear loads, such as spacecraft components and launch vehicle structures. It is particularly important for materials that are subjected to cyclic loading, as it can help predict the material's fatigue life. Shear modulus is typically measured using torsion tests, where a sample is twisted and the resulting deformation is measured. The shear modulus is then calculated as the ratio of the applied shear stress to the resulting shear strain.
