Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that uses a radioactive tracer to visualize metabolic processes in the body. In PET, a positron-emitting radionuclide is introduced into the body, which then undergoes decay and emits a positron. When the positron collides with an electron, it produces two gamma rays that are detected by a PET scanner. The data from the scanner is then used to create a three-dimensional image of the tracer distribution in the body. PET is commonly used in oncology to detect and stage cancer, as well as in neurology to study brain function and diagnose neurological disorders.
