Phenolic Resins
Phenolic resins are a type of thermosetting polymer that are widely used in the aerospace industry due to their excellent fire resistance, low smoke emission, and high temperature stability. They are formed by the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst and a curing agent. Phenolic resins are commonly used as adhesives, coatings, and composite materials in spacecraft and aircraft structures. They are also used in the manufacturing of heat shields, ablative materials, and insulation for rocket engines. Phenolic resins have high mechanical strength, good dimensional stability, and excellent resistance to chemicals and solvents. However, they are brittle and have poor impact resistance.
