Missed Approach Procedure

In the context of aerospace engineering, a Missed Approach Procedure is a predefined maneuver which is executed by a pilot when an instrument approach cannot be completed to a full-stop landing. This procedure is typically initiated either upon the pilot's own discretion or when instructed by air traffic control. The primary purpose of a missed approach procedure is to ensure that the aircraft can safely transition from the low altitude environment near the airport back to the higher altitude en-route structure, while avoiding obstacles and other air traffic. The procedure involves climbing to a specified altitude, while turning towards a specific direction and maintaining a specific airspeed. The aircraft then proceeds to a designated waypoint, from which it can either attempt another approach or proceed to an alternate airport. The specifics of the missed approach procedure for a particular runway are depicted on the instrument approach chart for that runway. The procedure is designed based on the performance characteristics of the aircraft, the local terrain, and the local airspace structure.
