Max Q

In aerospace engineering, Max Q refers to the point at which a vehicle in atmospheric flight experiences the maximum dynamic pressure. This is a significant milestone in the ascent of a rocket or other spacecraft, as it is the point of greatest mechanical stress on the structure of the vehicle. Dynamic pressure is a function of the air density and the square of the vehicle's speed. As a rocket ascends, the air density decreases but the vehicle's speed increases. At low altitudes, the air density is high but the vehicle's speed is low, so dynamic pressure is low. As the vehicle ascends, its speed increases, raising the dynamic pressure. However, the air density also decreases, which reduces the dynamic pressure. The maximum dynamic pressure, or Max Q, occurs at the point where the increasing vehicle speed and decreasing air density balance out. After the vehicle passes Max Q, the dynamic pressure begins to decrease, reducing the mechanical stress on the vehicle.
