Lossy Compression

Lossy compression is a data compression method that reduces the size of a file by permanently eliminating certain information that is deemed less important. This is achieved by using algorithms that identify and remove redundant or irrelevant data. The process of lossy compression results in a smaller file size, but at the cost of a reduction in the quality of the data. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, lossy compression is used to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted from spacecraft to Earth. This is important because the amount of data that can be transmitted is limited by the available bandwidth and the distance between the spacecraft and Earth. By using lossy compression, engineers can reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted, while still maintaining enough information to achieve the mission objectives.
